The Bible treats a dowry or bride-price as a serious marital matter, intended to uphold a woman’s honor, secure her future, and involve her family’s lawful consent. In Exodus 22:16-17, a man who seduces an unbetrothed virgin must pay the customary bride-price and marry her if her father agrees; even if marriage is refused, he remains responsible to pay.
