What does the Bible say about female ministers?

The Bible honors women as vital disciples and servants in Christ’s mission while giving distinct instructions for church order and teaching authority. From Genesis 1:27 onward, women share equally in God’s image and, in Christ, equal standing as heirs of grace (Galatians 3:28). Scripture records women who prophesied, served, supported ministry, instructed others, and exercised notable leadership, including Miriam, Deborah, Priscilla, Phoebe, and the women who labored with Paul (Exodus 15:20; Judges 4:4-5; Acts 18:26; Romans 16:1-2; Philippians 4:3). Yet 1 Timothy 2:11-12 is commonly understood in historic Reformed churches to reserve the governing, authoritative teaching office of elder or pastor for qualified men. Churches should therefore welcome and equip women for abundant, meaningful ministry under Scripture’s wise order.
