What does the Bible say about high places?
Bible Topic · WEB
The Bible teaches that high places were often centers of worship that became closely associated with idolatry, though they were sometimes used temporarily for worship before the temple was built. Solomon sacrificed at Gibeon in 1 Kings 3:4, yet the people’s use of high places reflected incomplete obedience to God’s appointed worship. Solomon later built high places for false gods, leading Israel toward grave sin (1 Kings 11:7-8). Even reforms under godly kings could remain incomplete when the people continued sacrificing at such places (2 Chronicles 33:17). The prophets condemn high places used for evil, including the horrific worship condemned in Jeremiah 7:31. God calls his people to worship him alone, according to his Word, with undivided hearts.
