What does the Bible say about modern day prophets?

The Bible teaches that God gave prophets to reveal his word, but believers must carefully test all modern claims of prophecy by the completed, authoritative Scriptures. While Ephesians 4:11-14 speaks of prophetic ministry in Christ's church, the apostles and prophets were foundational witnesses whose teaching now guides the church through Scripture. 2 Peter 1:19-21 grounds prophecy in God's own speaking, not human imagination, and 1 John 4:1 commands Christians to test spirits because false prophets exist. Jesus likewise warns against them in Matthew 7:15, and Jeremiah 23:25-40 condemns those who speak visions God has not given. We should not despise what is truly from God, but, as 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 says, test everything and hold fast to what is good.
