What does the Bible say about sanitation?

The Bible teaches that sanitation and ceremonial cleanliness mattered in Israel because God is holy, and uncleanness visibly reminded his people of sin, death, and their need for cleansing. Leviticus 5:2 and 11:24-40 require recognition of defilement through contact with carcasses and prescribe washing and temporary separation. Leviticus 22:4-6 restricts unclean priests from holy food, while Numbers 9:6, 10 and 19:11-16 address defilement from the dead and provide means of restoration. These laws promoted careful community life, but they also pointed beyond outward washing to the deeper cleansing God provides from sin. In Christ, believers are purified before God and called to pursue holiness in body and life.
