The Bible permits the prudent defense of life and the protection of those entrusted to our care, while forbidding personal vengeance and calling believers to peace, mercy, and trust in God. Exodus 22:2-3 recognizes the legitimacy of resisting a violent intruder, and Psalm 144:1 praises God as the one who equips His people for necessary conflict.
