What does the Bible say about self-indulgence?

The Bible warns that self-indulgence promises satisfaction but cannot satisfy the soul, and it calls us to receive God’s gifts with gratitude while living for him rather than for ourselves. Ecclesiastes 2:10 records Solomon’s pursuit of every pleasure, yet his conclusion was that such labor and delight were vanity apart from God. In Luke 12:16-20, the rich fool stores up abundance for his own ease but dies unprepared to meet God, showing the danger of being rich toward oneself but not toward God. Luke 16:19 likewise contrasts a self-satisfied rich man with poor Lazarus and warns that present comfort without mercy, faith, and repentance ends in judgment.
