What does the Bible say about separation in marriage?

Bible Topic · WEB

The Bible teaches that marriage is a holy, lifelong covenant, so separation and divorce are grievous realities to be resisted, pursued with repentance and reconciliation where possible, and handled with truth, mercy, and peace. In 1 Corinthians 7:10-11, Paul urges spouses not to separate, and if separation occurs, to remain unmarried or be reconciled. Yet 1 Corinthians 7:15 recognizes that a believer is not bound when an unbelieving spouse abandons the marriage. Jesus condemns divorce rooted in hard hearts (Matthew 19:8; Matthew 5:32), while Hebrews 13:4 calls believers to honor marriage. Christian husbands and wives are to practice Christlike, sacrificial love and faithful respect (Ephesians 5:22-33; 1 Peter 3:7).
