What does the Bible say about speaking ill of others?

The Bible forbids speaking ill of others through slander, malicious gossip, contempt, and rash judgment, calling believers instead to truthful, gracious, and loving speech. James 4:11-12 warns that evil speech against a brother usurps God’s place as Judge, while James 1:26 teaches that uncontrolled speech exposes empty religion. Ephesians 4:29, 31 and Colossians 3:8 command Christians to put away corrupt, bitter, and abusive words and to speak what builds others up. Luke 6:37 urges mercy rather than condemnation, and Romans 12:19 leaves vengeance to God. Yet this does not forbid humble, necessary truth spoken for correction and protection.
