What does the Bible say about trade?

The Bible says trade is a lawful and useful part of human life when conducted with honesty, justice, love of neighbor, and trust in God rather than greed. Scripture commends diligent work and wise stewardship, while repeatedly condemning dishonest scales, fraud, exploitation, and gaining wealth by oppressing the poor. Proverbs 11:1 and 20:23 teach that the Lord detests false measures, and Leviticus 19:35-36 calls for fair dealings. Christians may buy, sell, invest, and labor in ordinary callings as servants of Christ, seeking the good of others as well as rightful provision for their households. Yet wealth is never to rule the heart, for life and security rest in God alone.
