What does the Bible say about volunteer work?

Bible Topic · WEB

The Bible teaches that believers should freely serve others in grateful response to God’s grace, using their gifts for the good of neighbor and the glory of God. Jesus calls His people to treat others as they themselves would wish to be treated, and says that giving is blessed (Luke 6:31, 6:38; Acts 20:35). Romans 12:6-8 encourages cheerful, diligent service according to the gifts God supplies. Such work is not a way to earn salvation, but living faith necessarily bears fruit in mercy and good deeds (James 2:14-24). As we work wholeheartedly for the Lord and share with those in need, God promises His sustaining care (Colossians 3:23; Isaiah 58:10-11; Hebrews 13:15-16).
