The Bible teaches that those who remain in unbelief and rebellion against God face his final, righteous judgment, while eternal life is found only through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus speaks soberly of eternal punishment and of God’s authority to judge both body and soul in hell (Matthew 25:41, 46; Matthew 10:28). Revelation 21:8 and Romans 2:6-8 describe judgment according to God’s holy justice, and 2 Thessalonians 1:9 calls it eternal destruction away from the Lord’s favorable presence. Yet Scripture also holds out the gospel: the wages of sin is death, but God gives eternal life in Christ (Romans 6:23). Whoever believes the Son has life; whoever rejects him remains under God’s wrath (John 3:36).
