What does the Bible say about music in worship?

The Bible teaches that music in worship is a joyful, reverent response to God’s saving grace, meant to praise him, instruct his people, and strengthen faith. The Psalms repeatedly call God’s people to sing with gladness and skill, offering praise for his greatness and steadfast love (Psalms 95:1; 100:1-2; 150:1-6; 33:3). Colossians 3:16 and Ephesians 5:19 show that sung psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs help the church dwell in Christ’s word and encourage one another. Even in suffering, believers may sing to God, as Paul and Silas did in Acts 16:25. Music should therefore serve God’s glory and the edification of his gathered people.
