What does the Bible say about the past?

The Bible teaches that the past should be remembered with gratitude and repentance, but not idolized, feared, or allowed to rule our present faith in God. Ecclesiastes 7:10 warns against romanticizing former days, since such comparisons often question God’s wise providence. Isaiah 43:18 calls God’s people not to dwell on former things because he is able to do new work in fulfillment of his saving purposes. Yet the past is not meaningless: God’s mercies, judgments, and promises instruct us and display his faithfulness. Hebrews 13:8 anchors believers in Christ, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Therefore, Christians may face both regret and gratitude with confidence that God redeems his people and directs their future.
