What does the Bible say about deserts?

The Bible presents deserts as places of testing, dependence, judgment, and gracious provision, where God reveals both human unbelief and his steadfast faithfulness. Israel met God in the wilderness after deliverance from Egypt, yet repeatedly complained about thirst, food, and danger, as Exodus 17:1 and Numbers 20:5 show.
